Diddy is suing the co-owner of his tequila for racial discrimination

In a lawsuit, Combs said that the spirits brand “kneecapped" sales growth because the company considered it a “Black” brand and marketed it to only “urban customers.”

Theodore Baer So let me see if I can address all your comments. The FUBU guy as you call him is Daymond John who is currently worth about $350 million. FUBU originated in Hollis Queens and got its start and fame from being a brand that rappers and hip hop dancers wore. So that was literally how that brand got it’s start. I’m surprised you didn’t mention another brand that was worn heavily by inner city youth. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. Tommy Hilfiger. Tommy by the way was a German and Irish kid from upstate NY but he had been in the clothing game for years but also gravitated towards the hip hop culture with his clothing. But getting back to Diddy. Diddy had multiple clothing brands and his main focus was to bring hip hop fashion into the high fashion space and also make his brands globally known. Black people make up 13% of the US population. Why would Diddy only want to target 13% of the population. Diddy comes from the music world and his company Bad Boy entertainment had many globally successful acts. Diddy was no stranger to global marketing of music, clothing and later spirits. So when you say that Diddy was only marketing his clothing to a certain race you have to ask the question.. Don’t all races wear clothing? I mean in the modern world most people wear jeans, sweaters, jackets, etc etc. Not to mention.. Side note. Some of Diddy’s bands who were white were also wearing his brands. His fashion line extended way past racial lines and was worn by pretty much everyone. Now to address the Tequila issue. If the people he partnered with were only marketing the spirits to an urban audience and that produced low sales then Diddy is right to sue in that the brand was not being marketed and sold correctly. Diddy has launched multiple spirit brands so he knows of what he speaks. Tequila is from Mexico so it wouldn’t just be marketed in the inner city. If it was that’s a problem. You market to the masses in the hopes of casting the widest net and pulling in the most customers and then return customers. Bottom line. If the company did a poor job of marketing to the masses and that produced poor sales then any one of the owners and it investors could sue for any number of reasons. And you thinking any of his brands was catering only to Black people is off base. His ads, models and marketing always included all races and genders. You would see white models wearing SeanJean etc. Lastly the term kneecapping doesn’t have a specific race attached to it. The Irish used that technique as did many other groups. Again if you’re trying to assign that comment to one specific race or group it’s just not accurate.
